Hi there! I fully agree with you that AirBnb is a crap company. But I’d love to offer up how my partner and I do it.

Currently, we are traveling and rent Airbnbs for 3-6 months at a time.

We compile a list of suitable places for wherever we’re headed. Then contact each owner directly with a template email that lets them know we’re looking for a long term rental and that we both work from home. We have a list of 6 questions for them to answer, such as “does the home have high-speed internet? Or is it suitable for working from home?” And one question is—are they open to renting outside of AirBnb? We also share some info about us and our ability to provide lots of references.

Then we whittle down the list from there by taking the convo off-platform with those who seem like a good fit. My partner talks to the interested parties, and we choose where to go based on price. We tell folks we’re happy to rent on Airbnb if the numbers work but that it would save both parties a lot of money if not. We also offer to sign a short term lease and put down a deposit.

What’s been great about this is the all-inclusive pricing—no utilities! And at our current place, we’re saving $600/mth (each) of our monthly rental budget.

It’s time-consuming but it’s doable! And because we’re renting for longer stays the time is worth it.

This might not be feasible for you or someone doing shorter stays, but wanted to share in case it’s helpful.

Finally, we always take EXCELLENT care of the place (most Airbnbs renters do not) and leave it sparkling clean, which ensures we’ve got a laundry list of VERY happy references to share.

We’re currently on our second and it’s working great. But I had done this on my own years ago because I wanted the home environment while traveling without bringing all my ish. I’ve always found wonderful renters and things go smoothly. Highly recommend!
